The goal of the bargaining unit is to form a union. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studio V&#8217;s Bargaining Unit works with the Building Workers Union (AWU), an affiliate of the International Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union. members of the bargaining unit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bean paste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">    I spoke on condition of anonymity regarding this article. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, negotiations are taking place with a &#8220;supermajority,&#8221; meaning that most of the offices are in favor of forming a union. The RC petition has now been filed with the NLRB, and &#8220;we are requesting that the employer remain neutral, and we hope that it will do so,&#8221; the bargaining unit member said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked why they formed a union, one employee said that &#8220;many construction workers are unable to achieve a reasonable work-life balance&#8221; and that &#8220;their work ethic requires them to provide unpaid overtime, and they lack the power to negotiate benefits.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workers unionizing at Studio V want first and foremost to &#8220;assert their legal right to collective bargaining,&#8221; the employee continued, &#8220;so that it reflects the collective will of the group rather than being imposed on individuals. This will ultimately increase transparency and democracy in the workplace.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said David DiMaria, a machinist organizer.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">    bean paste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">    The NLRB vote is likely to take place between mid-to-late May. If the NLRB votes in favor of the union, the collective bargaining process can begin. This is the fourth major union drive at private architecture firms in the United States since 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u201cA long-standing problem in the industry\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studio V Architecture was founded in 2006 by Jay Valgora. The New York City office has more than a dozen employees and promotes a diverse list of services. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residential<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">institutional, commercial; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">civic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose portfolio includes urban design projects. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bean paste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">    Valgora was contacted for comment via email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studio V&#8217;s bargaining unit cited &#8220;long-standing issues in the industry&#8221; as the reason employees began talking about unionizing. \u201cMany of us have been with SVA for several years,\u201d the employee said. \u201cWe developed a friendship and bonded over working on the project. We started talking informally about a union a year ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 20th, some union members handed over a letter to Studio V&#8217;s management demanding the following: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Card check neutrality agreement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014A contract in which an employer signs a pledge to remain neutral in the unionization process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studio V management did not grant the card check&#8217;s request for neutrality. Several conversations ensued between management and the bargaining unit, but were ultimately fruitless, leading to today&#8217;s filing of the RC petition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The long-term goal is to achieve a better work-life balance, caps on overtime hours, and the right to negotiate benefits and raises. Employees also want to &#8220;set a minimum wage for all roles and benchmark pay across the office.&#8221; This is a &#8220;common problem among employees of similar seniority and experience level.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStructural issues exist in every workplace, and the goal of this campaign is above all to uplift the profession as a whole,\u201d said a member of the bargaining unit. Forming a union is &#8220;the most viable way to effect change, especially for new graduates, people just entering the workforce with large amounts of debt.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pro-union announcement from Studio V Architecture comes shortly after another New York City firm, Sage &#038; Coombe Architects,&#8217;s collective bargaining agreement went into effect following unanimous ratification. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">    by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bean paste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sage and Combe Architects <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and bernheimer architecture<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both Brooklyn companies are unionized.
