But with July 4 rapidly approaching, it is unlikely that even one of President Donald Trump’s National Garden of American Heroes statues will be erected in time, sources familiar with the plans told CNN.\n <\/p>\n
\n
Founders and artists across the country who applied to create the giant classical-style sculpture, which will take several months to create, have not heard back from the Trump administration.\n <\/p>\n
\n
And plans for the garden have not yet been submitted to the Fine Arts Commission or the National Capital Planning Commission, two government agencies whose approval is required for construction.\n <\/p>\n
\n
“It has not been formally considered,” said a person familiar with the planning efforts. \u201cBased on the district\u2019s experience with pre-approval, I don\u2019t see how we can get this done in time for July.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n
Some progress has been made. The White House has set its sights on West Potomac Park, a scenic stretch of land along the Potomac River that is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in Washington, as the site for the garden, a person familiar with the plans told CNN. And the administration hired Washington, D.C.-based architect Michael Frank to advise on the project.\n <\/p>\n

But the White House has not officially announced its location, and sources say even that could change.\n <\/p>\n
\n
The project’s delays and twists and turns are emblematic of President Trump’s broader efforts to reshape the capital’s architecture and culture. That includes plans for a giant White House ballroom to replace the East Wing and a gold-accented Arc de Triomphe near Arlington National Cemetery, which some veterans groups oppose.\n <\/p>\n

Some critics worry that the sculpture garden built by President Trump’s appointees will also get a rubber stamp from the CFA or NCPC.\n <\/p>\n
\n
A person familiar with construction approvals said he was concerned that the sculpture garden could be “forced through without approval” by Congress or a committee “as was the case with the White House ballroom.”\n <\/p>\n
\n
The garden was not discussed at Thursday’s CFA meeting, and NCPC officials said they had no knowledge of the schedule for upcoming monthly meetings to consider the project.\n <\/p>\n
\n
The White House declined to comment.\n <\/p>\n
Unable to meet the deadline and start after making many adjustments

The project is a personal effort of President Trump and has been in the works for years. The idea was first floated six years ago by the then-45th president in a political speech at the base of Mount Rushmore.\n <\/p>\n
\n
President Trump announced his decision to build a monument “to the giants of the past” that would become “a vast outdoor park with statues of the greatest Americans of all time.”\n <\/p>\n
\n
Shortly after, the White House issued an executive order calling for the creation and opening of the National Garden of American Heroes by July 4, 2026.\n <\/p>\n
\n
However, the project went through many adjustments and launches.\n <\/p>\n
\n
The 2020 executive order was rescinded by President Joe Biden in 2021 and reissued days after President Trump returned to office.\n <\/p>\n
\n
In his second term, President Trump has pulled money from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services to fund cultural initiatives he supports, including the National Heroes Garden.\n <\/p>\n
\n
NEH and NEA have jointly set aside $34 million for the garden, and NEA will contribute $17 million to the project, according to internal documents reviewed by CNN.\n <\/p>\n
\n
And last year, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act allocated $40 million to the Department of the Interior to establish and maintain gardens.\n <\/p>\n
\n
of <\/strong>NEH would begin recruiting artists to apply to create the sculpture in April 2025, and artists would be notified in September 2025 if selected.\n <\/p>\n \n According to the timeline set by the NEH, those selected were to complete the sculpture by June 2026.\n <\/p>\n \n Last summer, when it became clear that the project would not be able to meet its original goal of delivering 250 statues by July of this year, the goalposts were moved and a new focus was placed on drastically reducing numbers. <\/strong>Between 25 and 50 statues were placed in place and ready for an unveiling ceremony in July. The remaining 250 statues will be added in the coming years.\n <\/p>\n \n However, it is unclear whether an artist has been selected or whether work has begun on the sculpture.\n <\/p>\n \n CNN reached out to a number of foundries and artists who applied to be part of the project, but was unable to find anyone who worked on the gardens.\n <\/p>\n \n The statues are intended to be classic and lifelike, made of marble, granite, bronze, copper, and brass, and are 1.2 times the height of the historical individual, or equivalent to statues between 6 and 8 feet tall.\n <\/p>\n \n In addition to Washington, D.C., the Black Hills, South Dakota and Philadelphia were also considered for the garden, multiple sources told CNN.\n <\/p>\n \n South Dakota had the most powerful pitching.
