Billy Batson is one of the strangest superheroes to talk about. With a single word, he can transform from an ordinary young man into a god-empowered adult with powers that rival or even surpass Superman. That word is, of course, Shazam. Originally, this was the name of the wizard who gave Billy powers, and Billy’s heroic persona was Captain Marvel. However, due to a trademark conflict with Marvel, DC was unable to publish a comic titled Captain Marvel. So they usually gave his comics names like Shazam, but with the New 52 reboot, they decided they wanted to match the title with the hero and officially changed his superhero name to Shazam.
While this made the logistical side of things smoother, it made the characters’ stories considerably more complex. After all, it was the wizard’s name, literally the one word Billy couldn’t say without turning back into a child. That point really depends on the writer and storyline, but the point is that the name change wasn’t the perfect solution. I’m sure DC thinks so too. the current justice league unlimited #18, DC looped all the way back. Billy Baston is officially Captain Marvel again, but how long do you think this will last?
Oh captain, captain of my mess
Billy’s superhero persona has a name and a very strange history. He is one of the most popular DC heroes in mainstream media, falling somewhere between Aquaman and Martian Manhunter in terms of notoriety. Most people who know anything about superheroes will at least recognize him when they see him. He’s iconic, and shouting Shazam and transforming are clearly the most memorable details of his character. Changing the name to Shazam seems like a no-brainer, especially considering the competition. Marvel’s own Captain Marvel is now perhaps better known, as well as from the company that bears that name.
People will obviously associate Captain Marvel with Marvel Comics. A DC character named Captain Marvel may be strange to new fans, and it may sound silly, but sometimes that intuition can be the difference between falling in love with the character or not. This problem only got worse with DC’s decision to change Shazam in 2011. Since then, Billy has starred in two live-action films, and Marvel Comics’ Cap has skyrocketed in popularity thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The current generation of fans has practically grown up on Shazam, and DC is pushing for this to permeate the public consciousness. Basically, Billy is competing with a supposedly more popular character who has a better chance of claiming his name, and that’s a bad thing.
Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time Billy’s name has changed over the years. in shazam (2023), was officially renamed Captain. In retrospect, this looks like DC trying to see if anyone would make a fuss about not being called Shazam. Fans seemed pretty ambivalent overall, which gave them a signal to fully commit to Captain Marvel. It is worth noting that shazam (2023) and justice league unlimited Both were written by Mark Waid. He is well known as a Silver Age and Billy fan, so he is probably the driving force behind this name return.
Captain’s strengths and weaknesses

Beyond the logistical issues, there are clear wins and losses for DC calling her Captain Marvel again. First of all, it will reassure all the old fans who never agreed with this change or simply preferred his original name. It will also be easier for Billy to say the magic words like his character. Billy and extended Shazamilli, Black Adam often face challenges based on whether they said or didn’t say the word in a particular situation. After all, tricking or forcing someone to say something is a common cliché. This means those stories are back on the table without the caveat that Billy can say them whenever he wants.
Of course, this also makes the myth less strange. The wizard can Shazam again, and Billy can go back to his mute state without transforming. The advantage is a cleaner worldview and older awareness. The downside, on the other hand, is that it can be confusing for new and casual fans, as discussed above. Billy’s name changes all the time. He was Captain Marvel for 71 years, Shazam for 12 years, Captain for three years, and now Captain Marvel again. I hope this name change actually sticks and DC doesn’t revert it in about 3 years.
