If the new era of ‘Survivor’ ends with season 50, what happens next? No matter what form the show takes, one thing I would suggest is that it’s time to officially retire from traveling.
On Wednesday’s episode of “Survivor 50,” Christian volunteered for the opportunity to go on a trip, and after hopping on a boat and going to the middle of nowhere, he received a letter from none other than Jimmy Fallon. Like Rachel Lamont’s journey in season 47, he has a certain amount of time to complete the puzzle, and if he fails, the puzzle and his advantage fall to the depths of the ocean below. Christian sadly failed in that mission, and that’s where the trouble began.
The Christians then had to take the letter back to camp and read it in front of the entire tribe. The note said he had to make “Survivor” history by being the first player to vote for him at Tribal Council. You couldn’t steal his vote. He must write his name on parchment. Whether it’s because of the showman with a fake idol in his partner (Rick Devens) or simply because he’s already “on the edge” (as Cirie put it), Christian is voted out and becomes the fourth juror.
What a great standalone concept! It was fresh and new, but it also caught us and the veteran returnees completely off guard. Did it sink Christian’s game for good? of course. Were there other factors behind his departure? perhaps. (I’ll be sure to ask him tomorrow.) But from the couch, I was jumping up and down with my mouth wide open, entertained with a capital E.
But I also think it brings the show to the edge of a cliff, leaving it with only one option moving forward: that Journey needs to be retired.
Why should the journey end?
The journey of the modern “survivor” has long been a topic of debate. They certainly couldn’t help the advantage-heavy Season 41, an installment that suffered greatly because it was packed with too many bells and whistles. And all these lost votes are few No more, just gameplay. (Let everyone play, Probst!)
For an example of how frustrating traveling can be, look no further than Season 48’s pizzeria Justin Pioppi. Justin was chosen by Raggi to go on a journey as a member of the defeated Vula tribe. He did not volunteer and had no choice whether to participate or not. Once there, they lost votes to a Yahtzee-like dice game. His torch was extinguished later that night. There’s no agency and, if you’re lucky, very little gameplay. Justin’s fate highlighted two things. 1) In the new era of “Survivor,” that luck has started to weigh heavily, and 2) Going on the road can be very bad.
Fast forward to the story of Christian Hubicki. He had the option of volunteering on an ocean trip. and He was given the opportunity to show off his puzzle skills. It didn’t work out this time, but at least it gave me more agency in both decision-making and gameplay. Despite having fun with the twist (sorry, Hubicki!), it supports the whole journey-to-the-corner concept. Who on earth would want to chase and jump on a boat? this? ! Losing a vote is bad enough, but it’s important to vote for yourself and Do you want to make that information public? Complete death penalty! If the ball is already rolling in one direction, why wouldn’t the enemy push from behind to ensure a kill? This twist essentially gave Christian the shovel and forced him to dig his own grave. (I wanted to see what would happen if Christians had to vote for themselves, but they didn’t) do not have It has to be made public. To me, that’s more interesting, but it’s probably a quieter moment on TV. )
Sure, the show could do the same thing with Justin and force players to travel against their will. However, I would rather see these side quests abolished all together. Enough lost votes! Enough games of chance! Travel has interfered with the game for too long. I’m sure there are other ways the show could fill each season with merit, but it feels like the journey in its current format has reached its expiration date.
What if it wasn’t? Future Players: Don’t do it!
host becomes player
I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention the man, the myth, the legend lizgod Jeff Probst has entered the Immunity Challenge! The Setup: If four pre-selected players can beat him in a grip-based endurance challenge, they’ll win a bag of rice big enough to get them through the rest of the season. But the catch is, if Probst defeats even one of them, they have to stay starved. The players in question were Joe, Tiffany, Ozzie, and Jonathan, and although Jeff beat four of them (Rizzo, Cirie, Emily, and Devens), he ultimately lost to the most important player. Rice achievement unlocked!
