From ‘Dune 3’ to ‘The Social Network’ sequel: The hottest titles released at CinemaCon

“Long live the movies.”

That’s what Paramount Skydance chief David Ellison said at the start of his presentation Thursday at CinemaCon, the annual film industry event in Las Vegas.

That sentiment held true all week, as studios including Paramount brought top stars and directors to the stage to preview their upcoming films.

Here are some of the most talked about titles that have been teased.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu”

Baby Yoda is coming to our screens, and director Jon Favreau is ready to introduce him to a “whole new audience.”

The film, which also stars Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver, will be released in theaters on May 22nd.

“Toy Story 5”

The popular Pixar movie Toy Story series is all about technology.

Viewers learned at CinemaCon that the fifth installment of the film depicts a young child obsessed with her Lilypad device, rather than her toy friends. And age has caught up with the toy and now we see Woody bald.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen reprise their iconic roles as Woody and Buzz in the film, which will be released on June 19th.

“Whale Fall”

Disney’s 20th Century Studios is adapting the novel by Daniel Krauss about a scuba diver played by Austin Abrams who is swallowed alive by a sperm whale.

Krauss co-wrote the script with director Brian Duffield. The footage shown at CinemaCon was well received by those in attendance.

However, moviegoers will have to wait until October 16th to see it in theaters.

“Avengers: Doomsday”

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and star Robert Downey Jr. gave viewers their first look at Marvel Cinematic Universe villain Doctor Doom.

Downey is, of course, known for his role as Tony Stark’s Iron Man. His return to the MCU as an all-new character was a shock when it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024.

The film “picks up where Avengers: Endgame left off,” Feige said. The movie will be released on December 18th, the same day as Dune: Part 3, so some fans are already proclaiming the pairing as Dunesday.

“Top Gun 3”

Maverick returned to the cockpit.

Tom Cruise is officially set to return for the third installment of the film series. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer also participated.

The original film about Cruise as a fighter pilot was released in 1986, and the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Joseph Kosinski, was a huge hit in 2022.

“Jackass: The Best and Last”

Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the “Jackass” crew once again bring shenanigans to theaters.

At CinemaCon, where the trailer for the fifth installment was shown, Knoxville reflected on the series.

“‘Jackass’ means a lot to me,” he said. “We knew it was our last film, so we worked extra hard to make sure it was our best Jackass movie ever.”

The movie will be released on June 26th.

“Digger”

Cruise stars in director Alejandro Iñárritu’s new dark comedy, which follows an oil company executive named Digger Rockwell.

In footage shown at CinemaCon, Cruise sports gray hair, a pot belly, and a southern accent. Iñárritu, who co-wrote the script, praised the actor.

“We know he is fearless,” Iñárritu said. “Stunts, planes, jumps. But I have to say it’s also a kind of fearlessness that embodies this character. I think this role is probably his most challenging.”

It is scheduled for release on October 2nd.

“Practical Magic 2”

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are bringing magic back to theaters this September. The actors are reteaming for the sequel to the 1998 cult classic.

“Why did we come here, Nicole?” Bullock joked at CinemaCon, referring to Kidman’s viral AMC ad.

“We come to this place for magic,” Kidman replied, reciting the line from the ad that also plays into the film’s title.

“Dune: Part 3”

Stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Jason Momoa joined director Denis Villeneuve to give attendees a first seven-minute preview of the sci-fi blockbuster.

The third installment takes place 17 years after the previous film, and depicts Paul Atreides, played by Chalamet, ruling the galaxy while marrying Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh.

“I didn’t want to follow in my footsteps,” Villeneuve said as he took to the stage at CinemaCon to a chorus of about 50 Fremen warriors. “I wanted to try something new.”

It will debut on December 18th.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day”

Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, Spider-Man, and “Maynard.”

In a clip from CinemaCon, viewers learned that Spidey took on a new nickname to greet his former girlfriend MJ (played by real-life girlfriend Zendaya). Of course she doesn’t know who he is. Because the last time we saw our hero, he sacrificed his identity to save others.

The new movie will be released on July 31st.

“Social liquidation”

The sequel to Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 hit film takes place 17 years after the original.

Jeremy Strong (of Succession fame) plays Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg (taking over the reins from Jesse Eisenberg).

“A while ago, I told the story of a college student who built a website in his dorm and connected to the world. As you may have noticed, some things have changed since that dream exploded into a global company,” Sorkin said. “There is no life that Facebook’s algorithms haven’t influenced. That influence has reshaped everything.”

The film, which will be released on October 9th, also stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Bill Burr.

The film stars Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Samantha Morton, Ryan Hurst, and Travis Scott.

“Why ‘The Odyssey’? ‘The Odyssey’ is a story that has fascinated people across generations for 3,000 years,” said director Nolan. “This isn’t a story. It’s a story.”

At CinemaCon, attendees got a glimpse of footage featuring a Trojan horse attack. The film is the first to be shot entirely on IMAX film and will be released on July 17th.

“Information Disclosure Day”

Director Steven Spielberg made his first visit to CinemaCon this week to promote his new sci-fi movie about aliens.

The film, which hits theaters on June 12, stars Colman Domingo, Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Wyatt Russell, and Eve Hewson.

However, Spielberg did not immediately reveal many details about the project.

Director Spielberg said, “This movie will answer questions and raise more questions,” calling the film an “experience.”

“Minions & Monsters”

Illumination’s latest movie, Minions, follows a group of little yellow creatures as they take over Hollywood.

The voice cast includes Allison Janney, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, and Trey Parker.

The movie will be released on July 1st.

Amazon MGM Studios

“Thomas Crown Affair”

Directed by and starring fresh-Oscar-winner Michael B. Jordan, the film is a reimagining of the 1968 project of the same name.

A billionaire played by Jordan faces off against a former FBI agent played by Adria Arjona. Jon Batiste composed the score.

The remake version is scheduled to be released on March 5, 2027.

“Spaceballs: The New One”

Mel Brooks’ beloved 1987 cult classic is getting a sequel.

The film, which Amazon announced will be released in April 2027, will feature returning members of the original cast including Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga and Bill Pullman.

Josh Gad, KeKi Palmer and Louis Pullman also star.
