Spider-Man exploded in popularity in the 2000s as Sam Raimi’s first movie brought Spider-Man to our screens, but in the comics, Marvel reinvented everything fans knew about Spider-Man. 10) Vulture
The Vulture was one of Spider-Man’s first ever villains in the 1960s, and has continued to be a legitimate threat in every decade since. She was exposed to nuclear radiation as part of Operation Crossroads, which activated her latent mutant powers. 6) Chasselas
Shasselas is a Spider-Man villain who debuted as J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr. competed for the title. She debuted in 2002’s Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #46 as part of the Moran/Spider Totem mythology. She is the entity of Spider-Wasp and is the spider’s natural enemy in the timeline. However, rather than killing Spider-Man, she did more to ruin Spider-Man’s life, as she attempted to discredit Peter Parker before attacking him in the guise of a human woman. Spider-Man had no chance of defeating Shasura alone and had to team up with Ezekiel Sims to set a trap for her in a sacred temple in Ghana to finally end her threat.
5) Ezekiel Sims
Ezekiel Sims isn’t a traditional Spider-Man villain, but he’s complex enough to fit in as both an ally and a villain at various points in the Spider-Totem storyline. Ezekiel debuted in 2001’s The Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #30, created by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr., making his debut in the same issue as Moran. He was part of a storyline that reconstructed Peter Parker’s origins and showed that it wasn’t a random spider bite, but an ancient mystical force at work. He was a mirror of what Peter could have been if he had been more selfish, but ultimately had a redemptive arc and sacrificed himself to save Peter.
4) Norman Osborn
It seems like every decade since the Green Goblin’s debut in the 1960s, he ends up as an important and iconic villain only to return with increasingly darker goals. Norman returned in the 2000s, and spent the 2000s gaining political and criminal power, eventually moving Norman Osborn beyond being a Spider-Man villain to becoming a major Marvel villain.
