Al Hashimi’s car breakdown was an emotional moment in the finale, but Moafi told Gold Derby that a key moment in which she claimed to have had car trouble and called her ex-husband to ask him to watch over their son had been cut. “That gesture, the way he offered himself, that kindness in that moment, is exactly what she needs in this moment,” she says. “That’s when she started to break down. And she quickly hung up the phone with him so he couldn’t hear, and then she broke down. But I think that moment also taught me a lot about where she was and that she needed to be alone right now, because not only did this trigger the trauma of her own life in this condition, but it was also the trigger that triggered her trust relationship.”
Moafi told Gold Derby that there was also a line in which Robbie joked, “I’m sorry, you’ve had a really bad day” after Dr. Al Hashimi reveals the diagnosis. She replied: “So do we, right?” “I love that moment. I love that interaction because he was right,” Moafi said. “He had a really bad day, and so did she, and we’ve seen horrible, horrible experiences all day. Will Langdon have a relapse?
Season 2 sees Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) go through the process of recovery, making amends, and insisting on sobriety, but he is also subject to a drug test. “I was reminded over and over again that half of the doctors who treat people for substance abuse relapse, and I was reminded over and over again that relapse is part of the addiction journey,” Ball told Gold Derby. “You never know what’s going to happen. … It’s nice to know exactly where the plane is going, but that doesn’t mean it’s definitely going to be comfortable.”
