‘Avengers: Endgame’ changes feel empty with new DOOMSDAY footage

when avengers/endgame It will return to theaters this September. new-New footage related to it doomsday. Marvel won’t be inserting deleted or extended scenes that they left on the cutting room floor in 2019. Co-director Joe Russo revealed that the movie has recently shot sequences “on set” Avengers: Doomsday‘s story. He is excited about this “unique” opportunity to build “bridges” between his films. I’m sure he’s his. I’m sure there are MCU fans who feel the same way. I’m not one of them. Because all of this feels empty.

I am very conscious of “money”. I can understand the financial reasons why Disney would want to re-release it. avengers/endgame With all-new footage promoting your next big-budget event movie, Avengers: Doomsday. I don’t care about that at all. Budgets and box office revenues are concerns for accountants. And even if this is just a cash grab, people either spend their money on this or they don’t. I may be a little naive in thinking that this isn’t just about selling tickets. I believe Marvel Studios has artistic and creative reasons for releasing this modified version. end game. As a fan, I definitely care about these things and how it affects the media as a whole. And artistic and creative reasons are precisely why this endeavor can feel empty, hopeless, and exhausting. In fact, it’s really tiring.

Some fans are also excited about this new feature doomsdayend game You may not enjoy the feeling of having to “see” a movie you’re already familiar with. This is especially disgusting because it’s essentially an even more ridiculous form of pop culture “homework.” Following the world of a movie already takes a huge amount of time even under normal circumstances. The concept and burden of having to know a lot of the old in order to appreciate the new is so pervasive (and often boring and frustrating) that artists promote their new work by advertising the lack of prior information necessary to enjoy the work.

instead of making doomsday Easy to watch and enjoy on its own merits, but the MCU is going the opposite route with this one end game change. I’m doing something star wars Fans have come to hate it for good reason, but it’s even worse. This isn’t just about replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen as Anakin’s ghost. It’s as if Disney filmed all new scenes during filming the force awakens and put them return of the jedian idea so upsetting that it would have sparked an actual riot outside of Lucasfilm. (Seriously, if you thought Han was mad when he first shot, imagine if a teenage Jar Jar stopped and asked, “Why would you shoot poor Greedyseed?”)

Now, Disney may not think this is an issue with the MCU, especially since fans of this series have proven to be huge nerds who love homework. In fact, this is a big reason why the series was so successful during its first decade. I know you didn’t mind the MCU homework. Like many others, I reviewed all the movies prior to watching them. avengers/infinity war. It was great! I loved it! And it paid off. The more homework you have done before, the more avengers: endgame, The more the movie rewards you, the more. Oh, I thought I didn’t have to watch it again. Thor: The Dark World? That’s a shame. But as much as that end game The film that rewarded the most die-hard MCU fans was also their final exam after a decade of study.

end game It was an exam that we all passed to graduate from Infinity Saga University. Now, for reasons I’ll explain in a moment, Marvel is saying that if you want to get a master’s degree, you need to go back and retake the three-hour test… Now, I’ve stretched this school analogy out longer than Reed Richards. But you get the point. This isn’t fun. This feels more like having to go back to your old job than an exciting new way to watch old movies. Avengers: Doomsday It is thought to serve as the end (beginning) of Phases 4-6 of the MCU’s multiversal saga. Any preparation or rewatching required to enhance this new experience should be limited to movies and shows from this era. Memories of the Infinity Saga are enough.

Instead, the Russos are conducting their own time heist, forcing us to accompany them and pay for our tickets. (To be fair, I still don’t know if this made any changes avengers: endgame arrives on Disney+ before doomsday Premiere. If so, it certainly helps. ) And all this just to see new footage it offers a completely different movie. Packed into an already completed work of art, this new footage exists solely as a “bridge” to the film that will be released seven years later. That was… very tiring.

We know why the Russos and Marvel Studios want and need that bridge. Whether you agree with it or not, there are artistic reasons for doing this. It’s about solving big problems. The MCU after Infinity Saga has never been the smooth narrative machine that Infinity Saga was. It has largely abandoned the serialization format it used to grow into a global giant. Despite some great individual pieces, too many characters and stories felt unimportant and left without impact. The unthinkable happened. You can skip entire shows or movies without feeling like you missed out. No one had ever felt like that before infinity war or end game.

Part of that approach was noble, as Marvel sought to tell new stories using a format that broke away from an aging model. Part of that approach wasn’t because Disney forced Marvel to feed into Disney+. But at this point, on the verge of that, Avengers: Doomsdaythe reason doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is that it’s hard to even remember who the characters in the Multiverse Saga are. When Shang-Chi finally returns to the MCU after five years, we don’t even know if he’ll remember that he’s a superhero.

The unfocused, meandering post-Thanos MCU hasn’t really “done its job” to get this latest installment either. the avengers movie. doomsday And the titular villain feels rushed because the entire War of the Multiverse story is half-baked. Part of that obviously has to do with the fact that Disney’s policy was revised after they fired Jonathan Majors and moved their big villain from Kang to Doom. But that’s one of many reasons. Not many viewers were excited about Kang’s growth or the current state of the series. But at least Kang was already part of the franchise. This is all about Doom’s involvement in the MCU at this point.

The fact that Marvel and the Russos built this “bridge” is a tacit admission that Phases 4, 5, and 6 lacked coherence and narrative focus. So they’re trying to instill it by putting it in place retroactively. avengers/endgame. They put this undercooked stage in the microwave and serve it as part of a meal they know you’ll love. The idea is obviously to give Avengers: Doomsday The story becomes even more weighty and important in the franchise. A new “connection” with avengers/endgame.

That won’t work. Even if it’s done well, even if it’s executed in an interesting, creative, and convincing way, you can’t microwave a gourmet meal. end game It was for fans. It was a gourmet meal for the enthusiast, and a fitting and rewarding conclusion to a decade of careful preparation. Marvel Studios and the Russos would love to offer an experience like that again, but right now it’s not possible. Avengers: Doomsday That in itself is make or break. This movie either overcomes its lack of build or it doesn’t, and there’s no “bridge” to change that.

It’s as hopeless as Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Victor Von Doom. It is an attempt to restore former glory without gaining it. This is an artistic endeavor that, under the best of circumstances, only serves to retroactively fix the problem. And it’s done in the worst possible way: altering a finished work of art. None of this is “unique” or exciting. It’s all so empty.
