‘Michael’ drama: Why the Jacksons said ‘no thank you’ and why the movie cut sexual abuse claims

Michael Jackson’s famous family was in attendance to celebrate the premiere of the new Michael Jackson biopic, but some members of the Jackson family despise the event and oppose the film.

On Monday at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, several members of the Jackson family gushed about the Antoine Fuqua-directed film. The film tells the story of the King of Pop’s origins, charting hitmaker Jackson’s rise from childhood to superstardom in the 1980s.

Jaafar Jackson, nephew of Michael Jackson and son of Jermaine Jackson, starred in the title role, and his uncles and aunts praised his performance in red carpet interviews. Marlon Jackson said, “Sometimes when I watch the movie, I think I’m seeing Michael up there. That’s how great he is.”

La Toya Jackson called his performance “absolutely amazing,” and echoed Marlon, saying she forgot she was looking at Ja’far. “I thought I was looking at my brother.”

But not everyone in the Jackson family wanted to celebrate the film. Most notable among the absentees were the “Beat It” singer’s pop star sister Janet Jackson and her daughter Paris Jackson. Levy Jackson, the eldest of the siblings, was also absent from the event. And while the film includes depictions of many of the Jackson brothers, several, including Janet, were asked to be left out of the biopic.

“I wish everyone had been in the movie, too.” latoya jackson he told Variety magazine at the premiere. “She was asked to do it, but she gently declined, so we have to respect her wishes.”

Rumors started flying last month that the “All For You” singer attended a family screening of the film and wasn’t happy with it. Page Six reported that Janet and Jermaine got into an argument, with Janet criticizing almost every scene.

During Monday’s premiere, “Entertainment Tonight” asked La Toya about the controversy, but she quickly cut it off. “There were absolutely no problems, nothing,” she said. “Trust me.”

Although Michael Jackson’s sons Prince and Bigi supported the film’s events (Prince attended Monday’s premiere and Biggi attended the Berlin premiere last week), and Prince served as an executive producer and was regularly on set, Paris Jackson has been vocal about her lack of involvement.

Last year, she posted on social media that she gave feedback on early drafts of the film, but her notes were not picked up. “I left it alone,” she said. “This is not my project. They’re going to make whatever they make.”

Paris Jackson, who works in the entertainment industry as a model, actor, and musician, said she has kept quiet about her feelings about the “sugar-coated” project because she knew many people would be happy with it. “This movie panders to a very specific part of my father’s fandom that still lives in fantasy,” she said.

“The thing about these biopics is that this is Hollywood. It’s a fantasyland. They’re not real, but they’re being sold as real,” she continued. “The narrative is controlled, there are a lot of inaccuracies, there are a lot of outright lies. At the end of the day, it doesn’t make much sense to me.”

Early drafts of the script for “Michael” included a plot point about sexual abuse allegations made by 13-year-old Jordan Chandler in 1993. Michael Jackson’s estate has reportedly been forced to scrap parts of the script after becoming aware of a contract that legally prohibits the dramatization of the Chandler family.

The film was originally scheduled for release last year, but a new ending and weeks of reshoots were required to complete the new version of the film. In the version released in theaters this week, “Michael” ends in 1988 and includes a teaser of a possible Part 2.

Colman Domingo and Nia Long, who play Michael Jackson’s parents Joe and Katherine Jackson, appeared on “Today” this week and gave a speech about elephants in movie theaters.

Director Domingo said, “The film is set from the 1960s to 1988, so it doesn’t address the original suspicion.” “Essentially, we’re focusing on who Michael is. So this is an intimate portrait of who Michael is through his eyes. That’s what it is.” this The film is.

“And there could be a part two that deals with other events that happen after that,” he continued. “This is the story of Michael’s origins, how he was raised, and how he found his voice as an artist and tried to become a solo artist.”

Long added that there may be a sequel “if the price is right.”
