Photographer takes pictures of women before and after giving birth to show their influence

Vajda Markeviciute Razmislavice decided to forego belly shots and instead focus on the eyes, wanting to document the impact of motherhood.

Projects created by photographers become a motherwhere she photographed 33 women before and after giving birth.

Normally you would expect these images to show changes in the body, but the Lithuanian (and mother herself) wanted to explore the female gaze.

Looks a bit like Marcos Alberti O project In that the image is simply a headshot, and only the face is used to show the effects.

No matter how much your friends tell you that they haven’t “changed” since having kids, that’s not entirely true. They may have retained some of the personality we knew, but becoming parents has changed them physically, mentally, and, importantly in this case, emotionally.

And Markeviciute-Razmislavice focused on the eyes as a conduit to express maternal thoughts and feelings in her art.

Speaking to My Modern Met, she explained that she wanted to “emphasize the female gaze” by “removing anything that distracts from the female gaze”, such as a baby bump.

The photo of the women side by side may seem subtle, but upon closer inspection, it’s as if each woman’s experience of motherhood is reflected in her eyes.

“Behind every portrait is the story of a woman, her unique journey, her transformation,” explains Marchesiute-Razmislavice.

Women were photographed during pregnancy with their first child and again within the first 3 months after delivery. The shoot was “very private,” with a very limited crew and only two models allowed in the room at a time.

However, there was a bit of a problem in that the lighting in the second image was “differently lit” because the woman needed access to the studio to take the baby in the stroller.

Questions the photographer asked the women

During the shoot, Markeviciute-Razmislavice asked only one question: “What did motherhood mean to them?”

She explained that during the first shoot, it was “all theory,” but during the second shoot, “most people couldn’t help but laugh.”

“They spoke openly about new experiences they had never imagined,” the photographer recalled. “The women talked about new challenges and the inner strength they discovered, about how no matter how impossible it may seem at first glance, you just have to try, and sometimes you didn’t realize it was possible at first.”

She explained how she could see “so many different emotions” running through her and that there were so many differences among the women.

“There was something invisible, very subtle, and at the same time deep and obvious. It’s certainly quite difficult for me to explain the changes that the whole team witnessed,” she said. “Some people can see, others cannot. It is vaguely possible to describe in detail the invisible things behind things. become a mother Portrait. ”

What Markeviciute Razmislavice noticed

The biggest change the photographer saw between pregnancy and childbirth was “a different gaze, a completely different energy, a maturation.”

She added that “all these details” of what the women went through were “hidden in the portrait.”

“And this also sends a very important message: There are things that are invisible to the naked eye, and the simplest shapes can hide complex content.” become a mother said the creator.

“Behind every portrait is a woman’s story, her unique journey, her transformation.”
