You can’t separate Steven Tyler from all the work he’s done for Aerosmith over the years.
While every lead singer has moments when he wonders if the rest of the band is really needed, there’s a good reason why Tyler’s vanity projects over the years haven’t necessarily brought money or other benefits to Aerosmith’s classics. The chemistry between him and Joe Perry is what made all their songs work, and even looking at the biggest bands in the world, Tyler knew better than to go too far with other groups.
So by the time Perry left in the late 1970s, most of the band had already had that problem. The guitar slinger may have been trying to do something on his own and move away from Tyler completely for a while, but the truth is, they’re musical brothers at the end of the day. Sure, they fight all the time, but the important point behind their cooperation is to bring out the best in each other.
The world may want to call them a Rolling Stones rip-off, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t chemistry between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Jagger wouldn’t have had the same big hit if he hadn’t been in the Stones, but when someone called you and asked if you’d like to jam with the other members of Led Zeppelin, it would have been hard for anyone in Tyler’s position to say no.
After all, when Aerosmith came up with their first riff, Zeppelin were in many ways the de facto No. 2 band behind the Stones. Perry has already sported a variety of facial expressions on stage, looking like a more Americanized Jimmy Page, but if… american idol It must have been a step too far for the rest of the group to hear that Tyler was jamming to Zeppelin songs.

And the truth is, many of Tyler’s best moves don’t work at all with Zeppelin’s aptitude. Aerosmith was a band with a lot of talent, but their brand of boogie relied heavily on old-school blues rhythms, so it might have been a little more difficult to capture the same kind of quirky rhythms and strange time signatures that Zeppelin injected into many of their classic songs.
Although it was a huge honor for him to even be asked to perform, the idea of continuing on stage without Joe Perry would have felt wrong. Tyler was already prepared for an uphill battle when he returned to his bandmates, but compared to other legendary frontmen of his generation, he knew better than to try to match the same energy that 19th century “Percy” had. physical graffiti.
